The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has expressed concern over the misuse of government-issued tablets by students, stating that some students are using the devices, which were intended to support learning, to access pornographic content.

Speaking in Parliament on Thursday, November 27, 2025, Haruna Iddrisu noted that approximately 980,000 of the 1.3 million tablets distributed to Senior High Schools nationwide still need to be fully customised and restricted for academic use.

“I inherited a contract with about 337 million US dollars, where some 1.3 million tablets were to be distributed across the country to all free senior high schools in the country so that learners can have access to digital tools. I’m told that the deployment of that is around 980,000,” he said.

He further added, “Mr Speaker, my attention was drawn to the fact that many of the devices are not customised and the students are using them for other purposes, including pornography, which is not acceptable.”

The Minister stressed that the government is treating the issue with seriousness.

The Education Ministry is now exploring measures to prevent such activities, including stricter monitoring and educational campaigns to guide responsible use of the technology.

Iddrisu emphasised the need for students to respect the tools provided and use them solely for learning purposes.

“Mr Speaker, the government is taking a high view of it, and there must be restrictions as to what the tablets can be used for, and they should be used strictly for the purpose of study,” he said.

Parents and teachers have also been called upon to play a more active role in supervising students’ tablet usage to ensure the devices serve their educational purpose.

The government remains committed to leveraging technology to improve education, but insists that such initiatives require responsible usage by the students themselves.

In November 2024, ten female senior high school students of the Namong SHS in the Ashanti region were suspended for watching pornographic content at their dormitory.

The Housemistress proceeded to the dormitory and caught the students watching porn videos on their phones, which later led to their suspension.
