Stanbic Bank donates 50 laptops to support Girls in STEM education at KNUST

Stanbic Bank Ghana PLC has renewed its annual commitment to Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) by donating 50 brand-new HP laptops to the Vice-Chancellor’s “Support One Needy Student with One Laptop” (SONSOL) project.
The donation, held on Friday, 30th August 2024, at the University’s Council Chamber, brings the bank’s total contribution to 250 laptops since the initiative began. This initiative aims to improve access to technology for underprivileged students at KNUST.

Stanbic Bank’s commitment to STEM
The delegation, led by Mr. Kwamina Asomaning, Chief Executive Officer, included key officials such as Mr. Victor Manu Yeboah, Chief Finance Officer; Mr. Musah Abdallah, Head of Corporate and Investment Banking; Mr. Mawuko Afadzinu, Head of Brand and Marketing; Mr. Richard Asare, Head of Public Sector; and Mr. Anthony Asare, Regional Manager of the Ashanti Regional Cluster.
Mr. Mawuko Afadzinu explained that the donation reflects Stanbic Bank’s longstanding support for STEM initiatives at KNUST. He highlighted that the bank’s vision aligns with the University’s mission to promote science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education, with a particular focus on female students.

Strengthening digital literacy and mentorship
Mr. Kwamina Asomaning praised the strong partnership between Stanbic Bank and KNUST, reaffirming the bank’s dedication to supporting the University’s initiatives. He emphasized that the bank’s efforts are directed towards enhancing digital literacy, especially for female students in STEM programs, and mentioned the mentorship opportunities provided by the bank to further develop students’ digital skills.

Vice-Chancellor’s appreciation
In response, Vice-Chancellor Professor (Mrs.) Rita Akosua Dickson expressed her deep gratitude for the donation, emphasizing KNUST’s commitment to producing professionals who serve both the nation and the global community. She highlighted the significant impact of the laptops in advancing digital literacy among students, particularly females in STEM disciplines, and stressed the importance of equal access to educational resources.

Professor Dickson commended Stanbic Bank for its continuous support and expressed optimism about future collaborations. She assured the delegation that the laptops would be distributed to deserving students, especially those identified as brilliant but needy, to support their academic success.
