President Mahama promises to sustain and improve Free SHS

President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to sustain and enhance the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy initiated by the Akufo-Addo administration, emphasizing his commitment to making education the cornerstone of national development.
Speaking at the 92nd National Convention of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission in Accra, President Mahama expressed his determination to build on the policy’s foundation to ensure it delivers its intended benefits.
“Education is the cornerstone of national progress, and to this end, as promised, while strengthening basic education, we will sustain and enhance the Free SHS policy so that we gain the benefits that it is intended to bestow,” he said.

Addressing challenges in Free SHS
President Mahama acknowledged the challenges that have accompanied the implementation of the Free SHS policy, including overcrowding and infrastructure deficits.
He promised to tackle these issues head-on to ensure the delivery of quality education at all levels.
Key among his pledges was the completion of all abandoned E-blocks initiated during his previous administration, which were intended to expand access to secondary education across the country.
Broad reforms in education
The President outlined several ambitious plans to reform and improve the education sector.
He pledged to implement free tuition for students entering public universities, easing the financial burden on families.
President Mahama emphasized the importance of technical and vocational education in producing a skilled workforce for Ghana’s industrial growth.
He committed to investments aimed at providing equitable access to learning resources nationwide.
President Mahama announced plans to establish a committee to organize a comprehensive review of the education system.
The conference would assess the impediments to quality education and propose solutions to strengthen the sector.

A vision for the future
President Mahama reiterated his administration’s commitment to making education a pillar of national progress.
By sustaining and improving the Free SHS policy, addressing infrastructure challenges, and investing in technical and higher education, the President aims to build an education system that supports the country’s development aspirations.
“This administration will focus on ensuring that every Ghanaian child has access to quality education, which is fundamental to building a prosperous nation,” he concluded.
