Four political parties have announced plans to embark on a nationwide demonstration on Monday, May 5, 2025, to protest the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo.
The parties — the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP)and People’s National Party (PNP), said the protest aims to defend Ghana’s constitutional order and safeguard the independence of the judiciary.
Emergency meeting leads to action
In a statement issued on Friday, April 25, the parties said the decision to demonstrate was taken during an emergency meeting held the previous day, Thursday, April 24.
They described the suspension of the Chief Justice as a “direct assault on judicial independence” and called on Ghanaians from all walks of life to join the protest.
President Mahama suspends Chief Justice
Chief Justice Torkornoo was suspended by President John Dramani Mahama on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, after a prima facie case was established following three separate petitions calling for her removal from office.
The suspension was carried out under Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution, after consultations with the Council of State.
A five-member committee has been formed to investigate the allegations against the Chief Justice.
“A clarion call to defend democracy”
The parties warned that the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) had shown a pattern of intimidation toward the judiciary and said the latest action must not go unchallenged.
“This nationwide demonstration is not about politics; it is about principle,” the statement said. “We will not allow political power to erode the foundations of our republic.”
It called on civil society organizations, religious bodies, and patriotic citizens to rise in defense of the judiciary, declaring that Ghanaians must not sit idle “while the independence of the judiciary is dismantled.”
