Policeman defrauds MTN agent of GH₵14,460 to pay betting debt

In a shocking development, General Constable (G/Const) Ernest Agyemang Darko, a police officer attached to the National Visibility unit at Police Headquarters in Accra, has been arrested on charges of defrauding an MTN Mobile Money Sales Agent of GH₵14,460.

G/Const. Darko asserted that he resorted to this course of action due to excessive pressure from unidentified individuals to settle debts incurred from betting

The incident, which occurred on November 29, 2023, around 3pm, was reported by Benjamin Tawiah, a Sales Agent of MTN at the Kasoa branch off New Market road.

Tawiah explained that G/Const. Darko visited the MTN office and requested a total amount of GH₵14,460 to be sent to various phone numbers.

According to Tawiah, G/Const. Darko instructed him to send GH₵4,060, GH₵5,000, GH₵5,000, and GH₵400 to different phone numbers.

However, after the transactions were completed, G/Const. Darko allegedly failed to pay the total amount.

In an attempt to withdraw the money involved, G/Const. Darko led Tawiah to the Kasoa branch of CBG, opposite the MTN Office.

Unfortunately, the bank was closed at the time, leading to Tawiah reporting the incident to the Kasoa Central District Patrols team led by Chief Inspector (C/Inspr.) Charles Yeboah.

The patrols team promptly apprehended G/Const. Darko and took him to the Kasoa Police Station for further investigations.

The Unit Commander of the suspect, Supt/Mr. Quarshie, was immediately informed of the incident by the Kasoa Central District Commander ASP/Mr. Emmanuel Amponsah.

A caution statement was obtained from G/Const. Darko, who claimed not to have money on hand or in his CBG bank account.

He asserted that he resorted to this course of action due to excessive pressure from unidentified individuals to settle debts incurred from betting.

As of now, G/Const. Darko remains in police custody pending further instructions as the investigation unfolds.
