The Ghana Police Service has arrested several members of the Democracy Hub during their second day of protests on Sunday, September 22, 2024, in Accra.
The protest, aimed at demonstrating against illegal mining, popularly known as “Galamsey,” was disrupted after some demonstrators deviated from the designated protest zones.
Protesters veer off agreed locations
According to Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director of Public Affairs for the Ghana Police Service, the protest organizers had previously agreed to hold the demonstration at seven specific locations around the 37 Military Hospital Roundabout to maintain law and order.
However, some demonstrators veered off those locations, leading to their arrests.
“We had earlier engaged the demonstrators on the agreed locations to ensure the free flow of traffic and avoid any disruptions to the public,” ACP Ansah-Akrofi stated.
“When they attempted to impede traffic, block intersections, and push away police officers and barricades, we were compelled to effect arrests in the interest of law and order.”
Police Maintain Commitment to Law and Order
The Police emphasized their dedication to ensuring public safety and maintaining order during demonstrations.
“We are committed to protecting lives, property, and the rule of law,” ACP Ansah-Akrofi added.
Protesters disperse after arrests
At the time of filing this report, most of the demonstrators had dispersed, likely due to the random arrests made by the police throughout the protest.
The demonstration had been expected to continue as part of a broader effort by Democracy Hub to protest illegal mining practices and their detrimental impact on the environment.
