The OneGhana Movement has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight Ghanaians, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, on August 6, 2025.
In a statement signed by Director Senyo Hosi, the movement extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, their colleagues, and all affected Ghanaians, affirming solidarity with the entire nation during this difficult period of mourning.
Remembering champions of national service
“We honour the memory and legacy of the departed ministers and the other passengers on the helicopter,” the statement read. “We recognise and honour their dedication to public service and the betterment of Ghana.”
The OneGhana Movement noted that the loss resonates not just within political circles but across the country, as the ministers were active participants in the movement’s anti-illegal mining (galamsey) initiatives.
According to the group, both Dr. Omane Boamah and Dr. Murtala Mohammed were committed collaborators in the Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey and played key roles in advocacy and policy engagement efforts aimed at safeguarding Ghana’s environment.
Support for OneGhana initiatives
The group recalled that Defence Minister Omane Boamah had served as the Special Guest of Honour at its recent Republic Day Public Lecture, organised in partnership with the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College. His involvement, the movement said, underscored his deep commitment to civic and national duty.
“We are heartbroken and devastated by this tragic occurrence,” the statement noted, “but we are hopeful that their service to country shall be a continuous inspiration to many, and that their fight against galamsey — which led to the loss of their lives — shall not be in vain.”
Calls for action and reform
The OneGhana Movement is calling on the government to not only provide strong support for the bereaved families but to also introduce a comprehensive group life insurance scheme for government appointees.
“We must protect the families of those who elect to serve our country,” the movement said, stressing the need for institutional responsibility in times of national tragedy.
It also demanded a thorough and transparent investigation into the circumstances of the crash, alongside an urgent review of Ghana’s aviation safety protocols to prevent future disasters.
A moment of unity and resolve
“This sorrowful moment is also a call for unity and resilience,” the movement said, urging all Ghanaians to come together in compassion and strength, and to reaffirm national values.
The statement concluded with a solemn prayer: “May the souls of our departed leaders rest in peace, and may Ghana remain united and steadfast.”
