One Ghana Movement condemns post-election violence

The United States (US) has congratulated President-elect John Dramani Mahama on his successful election as Ghana’s next leader in the December 7 polls.
“We extend further congratulations to Vice President-elect Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang on becoming Ghana’s first female Vice President,” Mr Antony J. Blinken, the US Secretary of State said in a statement.
It said the US commends the Electoral Commission, its hundreds of thousands of poll workers, civil society, and the Ghana’s security forces, who helped ensure a peaceful and transparent process.
“We also applaud Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for his gracious acceptance of the results,” he said.
The statement noted that the US was aware of reports of isolated incidents of violence and at least four confirmed deaths and extended its condolences to the families of those killed, urging a full investigation and accountability.
It said the US was proud of its enduring partnership and friendship with the people and government of Ghana and was looking forward to working closely with President-elect Mahama to carry its historic relationship into the future.
