The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has lauded the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) for taking swift action to improve safety on the Biremso Bridge, following concerns raised over its deteriorating condition.
In a statement, the NRSA said it had issued a notice to the GHA after receiving complaints from transport operators about the dangerous state of the bridge, which is located along the N6 highway.
The GHA responded by installing essential road furniture, including signage and barriers, aimed at reducing the risk of road traffic crashes.
Despite the improvements, the NRSA noted that instances of driver indiscipline continue to threaten road safety.
“Some motorists disregard speed limits and engage in wrongful overtaking, posing risks to themselves and other road users,” the statement said.
These actions, the NRSA warned, undermine the effectiveness of the new safety measures.
The Authority reminded drivers of the legal speed limits: 80 km/h on highways, 50 km/h in urban areas, and 30 km/h in settlement zones.
Drivers were also cautioned against overtaking on curves and hills, with a stern warning that violators would face legal consequences.
The NRSA praised the collaboration between transport operators, the GHA, and the Authority as a model of effective stakeholder engagement in enhancing road infrastructure.
“Road safety remains a collective responsibility,” the statement emphasized.
The Authority urged all road users to exercise caution and respect traffic regulations to ensure safer roads for everyone.
