Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has formally filed his nomination to contest the presidential slot of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Dr. Bawumia, who submitted his forms at the NPP headquarters in Accra on Thursday, August 28, 2025, was accompanied by his wife, Samira Bawumia, party executives, loyalists, and a large crowd of supporters clad in NPP colours.

The atmosphere was charged with chants and music as his team declared him the candidate best positioned to lead the party into the next elections.

Dr. Bawumia expressed gratitude to the NPP leadership and grassroots for their support, pledging to run a clean, issues-based campaign.

He emphasised his vision to build a modern, inclusive Ghana anchored on digital innovation, economic transformation, industrialisation, and job creation for the youth.

Bawumia becomes one of the leading contenders in what is expected to be a competitive race, as other aspirants, including senior party figures and ministers, have also expressed interest in the slot.

His filing will follow that of former General Secretary of the party, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, who became the first aspirant to submit his nomination forms.

By taking their ambitions from mere announcements to the formal nomination stage, the aspirants are giving fresh impetus to what promises to be a highly competitive contest as the NPP prepares to choose its next flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.

Agyepong, who served as General Secretary between 2014 and 2015, submitted his nomination documents to the Presidential Elections Committee on Tuesday, August 26, 2025.

His decision to be the first to file has been described by his supporters as a demonstration of his readiness to lead the party into the future.

The filing comes at a time when the NPP is making significant adjustments to its electoral processes, including the expansion of its voter register.

The update, announced by the Presidential Elections Committee, seeks to ensure inclusiveness and broaden participation in what is expected to be one of the most consequential internal contests in the party’s recent history.

The NPP will hold its presidential primaries later next year to elect a flagbearer to succeed former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the party’s leader going into the 2028 general elections.
