The Chairman of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Presidential Elections Committee, has expressed the view that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) requires a chairman with leadership qualities similar to those of Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Osei Owusu praised Asiedu Nketia’s organisational skills, discipline, and ability to unify party members, noting that such traits are critical for the success and cohesion of any political party.

Osei Owusu emphasised that the role of a party chairman goes beyond administrative duties, highlighting the importance of building strong grassroots structures, mediating internal conflicts, and positioning the party for electoral success.

He said “It got to a point where most people are leaving the party to join the NDC, and the numbers keep increasing. So maybe there is someone attracting them.”

Speaking on Accra-based Asempa FM, he cited Asiedu Nketia’s leadership as a key factor behind the NDC’s growing appeal, pointing to consistency and firmness as defining traits.

He stated that “What I have seen myself is Asiedu Nketia. He is the one who has made the party attractive. You see the consistency; it’s visible. If you are there and you want to be stubborn, he will deal with you.

“To bring the appeal back, we have to restore discipline. I believe that if we continue with elections, we won’t get the person we need at this time. We should focus on searching for the right person and prepare to put the party in their hands.”

The comments come at a time when the NPP is preparing for internal elections and strategisng for upcoming national polls, making leadership and organisational effectiveness a focal point for party discussions.

Speaking on the potential candidate to lead and unite the party, Osei Owusu mentioned former Energy Minister Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko as a suitable candidate to lead the party, describing him as someone capable of restoring discipline.

“If Boakye Agyarko says he will lead the party, I will stop what I am doing and support him. He is the person who can bring the discipline and everything we need right now to bring everyone back to the party,” he said.
