The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has formally launched its campaign to capture the Ayawaso East parliamentary seat, endorsing Baba Ali Yussif as its candidate for the crucial by-election scheduled for Tuesday, March 3, 2026.
The decision was announced in a press release issued by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong on Monday, February 9, 2026, following what the party described as a consensus-building process aimed at presenting a united front.
Baba Ali Yussif, who currently serves as the party’s Constituency Secretary, emerged after the National Executive Committee (NEC) established a Candidate Search Committee — chaired by former General Secretary John Boadu — to select a contender capable of mounting a strong challenge in the traditionally NDC-leaning constituency.
His acclamation took place on Sunday, February 8, 2026, during an expanded Constituency Executive Committee meeting and Delegates Conference.
The NPP’s swift endorsement of a single candidate comes as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) faces internal tensions in the same constituency. While the NPP has rallied behind one contender, the NDC is grappling with allegations of bribery and vote-buying.
In his statement, Justin Kodua Frimpong urged party members to set aside their differences and focus on the March 3 polls.
The party said it views the by-election not only as a contest for a parliamentary seat but also as an opportunity to provide stronger representation to a constituency that has recently been at the centre of political attention.
“The Party therefore calls on all members, supporters and sympathisers of the NPP to rally solidly behind Baba Ali Yussif, who represents the Party’s best opportunity to secure victory … and help restore hope, effective representation and prosperity to the constituency,” the statement said.
With the Electoral Commission preparing for the March 3 vote, attention now turns to whether the NPP’s campaign can break the NDC’s long-standing hold on the Ayawaso East seat.
