The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced a sweeping amnesty for all members who were serving suspensions or facing pending disciplinary cases, in what party leaders describe as a decisive step toward reconciliation and unity.

In a statement dated August 16, 2025, and signed by the Acting National Chairman, Mr. Danquah Smith Buttey, the party disclosed that the resolution was adopted during an emergency National Council meeting held on July 25.

According to the statement, the directive “lifts all such suspensions and waives any ongoing proceedings against affected members,” effectively restoring hundreds of grassroots and high-profile members who had fallen foul of the party’s disciplinary machinery in recent years.

Reapplication for forfeited members

While the blanket amnesty covers suspended members, the party clarified that individuals who had forfeited their membership must formally reapply for reinstatement at the national secretariat. However, once reinstated, such members will face restrictions, including a two-year ban from contesting internal party elections.

Warning to party executives

The party leadership also cautioned its regional and constituency executives to adhere strictly to laid-down procedures in handling disciplinary issues going forward.

It stressed that arbitrary suspensions, which had previously created internal rifts and discontent, would no longer be tolerated.

Commitment to cohesion

The decision, the statement added, reflects the NPP’s determination to consolidate internal cohesion and prepare the rank and file for upcoming political engagements.

“This move is not just about healing divisions but about fortifying the party for the challenges ahead,” the statement noted.

Political observers believe the amnesty is a strategic gesture by the party leadership to mend cracks and present a united front as Ghana inches closer to the next general election.
