The National Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has issued a statement condemning the recent arrests of social media activists Fante Comedy, AY, and Sir-Obama Pokuase.

The party expressed “disdain” and “shock” at the actions of the Ghana Police Service, accusing it of wasting resources on arresting young citizens for comments made “out of exuberance.”

In a press release signed by the Party’s Youth Organiser, Salam Mustapha, the NPP stated that social media activists, like all citizens, have no actionable ability to cause harm beyond their comments.

They questioned the motives behind the arrests, wondering why the police has taken to targeting persons who associate with the party.

“Is it a deliberate attempt to intimidate us?” they asked.

The statement further criticised the Ghana Police Service, reminding them that freedom of speech is guaranteed in the country for all citizens.

It also questioned the integrity of the police, referencing their motto of “Service with Integrity” and asking, “Where is the INTEGRITY you speak of?”

The Youth Wing’s condemnation follows a recent violent attack on a former Minister of State and MP for Awutu Senya East, Hon. Hawa Koomson, which they claim was perpetrated by individuals associated with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The statement alleges that police officials woefully failed to act in that instance but are now “walking free” to arrest “harmless youth” for having “just a social media conversation.”

“This is shamelessly biased and absolutely partisan,” the statement declared.

The release concludes with a strong condemnation of the arrests, stating that these arrests “fly in the face of our democratic ethos.”

They have therefore demanded the unconditional and immediate release of Fante Comedy, AY, and Sir-Obama Pokuase.
