MTN Ghana, through its subsidiary MobileMoney LTD (MoMo), has assured customers that its mobile money platform remains fully secure and uncompromised, dispelling widespread rumours circulating on social media that falsely claimed a breach in its systems.
The company issued a strongly worded statement on Monday to counter what it described as “entirely false and, in some cases, deliberately deceptive” claims that encouraged customers to withdraw their funds over fears of a cybersecurity breach.
No funds lost, no system breach
“We want to reassure our customers that the recent cybersecurity incident has not affected the operation or security of our mobile money services,” the company declared in a public release.
MobileMoney LTD emphasized that no customer funds have been lost, and that the platform is operating as normal. The company also reiterated that it remains committed to maintaining the trust and confidence of its users, assuring them that robust security mechanisms are in place to protect every transaction.
Industry-standard security measures in place
To bolster confidence in its systems, MoMo detailed the multi-layered security infrastructure that protects its platform. These include end-to-end encryption, multi-factor authentication, and 24/7 real-time system monitoring. These safeguards are designed to prevent unauthorized access and detect any potential fraudulent activity.
“MTN Mobile Money remains one of the most secure platforms in the mobile financial services space. Our customers’ safety is our top priority,” the company said.
Collaboration with regulators and cybersecurity experts
MobileMoney LTD also disclosed that it works closely with regulatory bodies, cybersecurity professionals, and partner financial institutions to ensure it adheres to the highest standards of operational and data security.
The company stated that such collaborations enhance its ability to remain proactive and resilient in the face of evolving cyber threats.
Customers advised to ignore rumours and stay vigilant
MobileMoney LTD urged customers to disregard unofficial and misleading messages that are being circulated through social media and other informal channels.
The company advised the public to rely only on official communication channels — including verified social media pages, the MTN Ghana website, and customer care platforms — for accurate updates and information.
Additionally, users were reminded not to share sensitive personal information, including passwords, PINs, and one-time passwords (OTPs), with anyone through phone calls, SMS, or emails.
Standing firm against misinformation
MTN Ghana’s response comes amid rising concern about cyber fraud and misinformation in the digital financial space. By issuing a clear and firm rebuttal, the telecom giant is seeking not only to reassure its millions of mobile money users but also to push back against the broader challenge of fake news undermining digital trust.
As digital financial services continue to grow across Ghana and the region, the credibility and security of platforms like MoMo will remain critical. MTN Ghana has signaled its determination to stay ahead of threats while keeping customers informed and protected.
