The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has announced a significant temporary relief measure for its members by waiving the standard one-month waiting period for specific categories of enrolment and renewal.
The waiver, which began in November, will remain in effect until December 14, 2025, and forms part of the Authority’s broader drive to expand active membership and improve access to healthcare under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
The initiative is being rolled out under the banner of the “NHIS Active Month Campaign.”
According to the NHIA, the waiver applies to two key groups: newly enrolled NHIS members and individuals seeking to renew their membership after it has expired for more than three months.
Under normal circumstances, both groups would be required to wait one month before becoming eligible to receive services under the Scheme.
The suspension of this rule means that anyone who falls within these categories and completes their registration or renewal during the NHIS Active Month will enjoy immediate access to NHIS services without delay.
The Authority explained that the objective of the campaign is to make it easier for more Ghanaians to remain active on the Scheme, stressing its commitment to ensuring that “no one is left behind in accessing healthcare.”
NHIA officials believe the measure will encourage people who may have allowed their membership to lapse—particularly those facing financial or logistical barriers—to return to the Scheme and continue receiving affordable healthcare.
As part of the campaign, the public is being urged to take advantage of the multiple renewal and enrolment channels available.
Members can visit any NHIS district office nationwide, use the MyNHIS mobile application, or dial the NHIS Mobile Renewal short code *929# to complete the process digitally.
The Authority also encouraged subscribers to activate the auto-renewal option to avoid future disruptions in coverage.
The NHIA noted that maintaining an active membership remains critical to ensuring that subscribers have uninterrupted access to essential medical services.
By removing the waiting period for a limited time, the Authority hopes to boost enrolment figures, strengthen the Scheme’s financial sustainability, and reinforce its role in delivering quality and affordable healthcare to millions of Ghanaians.
