Six aspirants have officially picked nomination forms to contest the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primary in the Ayawaso East Constituency, signalling the start of what is expected to be a competitive internal contest.

The picking of forms marks the first formal step in the party’s preparations to elect a parliamentary candidate for the constituency ahead of the by-elections.

They include the party’s constituency chairman, Mohammed Ramme; Hajia Amina Adam, wife of the late Member of Parliament; Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Baba Jamal; and Dr Yakubu Azindow.

The others are Najib Mohammed Sani and Salam Daru.

The NDC will hold its parliamentary primary on February 7, 2026, to elect the party’s candidate for the Ayawaso East Constituency parliamentary by-election slated for March 3, 2026.

The Deputy Director of Elections and IT of the NDC, Rashid Tanko Computer, outlined activities leading up to the primary, describing the contest as an interesting one.

He said “At the close of nominations today, six persons picked nomination forms to contest the upcoming primaries. The wife of the late MP was the last person to pick nominations today. It is going to be a very interesting contest. The filing will be on the January 27 which is Tuesday.

“We are waiting to see how many of them will bring their forms.”

The seat became vacant upon the death of the Member of Parliament, Mahama Naser Toure, triggering the constitutional requirement under Article 112(5) for a by-election to fill the vacancy.

Nominations have been formally opened for all eligible individuals seeking to contest. The Commission indicated that nomination forms may be downloaded from its website from January 16 to February 11, 2026.

Completed forms will be received at the Ayawaso East Municipal Office at North Ridge from Monday, February 9 to Wednesday, February 11, between 9:00 am and 12:00 pm, and again from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm each day.

Candidates may personally submit their forms or have them delivered by their proposer or seconder.

Each nomination form must be endorsed by two registered voters serving as proposer and seconder, and supported by eighteen additional registered voters. All forms must be submitted in quadruplicate.

The filing fee is GH¢10,000 per candidate, with a reduced fee of GH¢7,500 for female aspirants and persons with disabilities.
