NAPO: Voters don’t elect leaders on the basis of religion or tribe

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Vice-Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has called on those campaigning along religious and tribal lines to reconsider their strategies.
Speaking at a community engagement in Ahenkro, in the Afigya Kwabre North Constituency, Dr. Prempeh emphasized that Ghanaians historically vote based on competence, track record, and vision, rather than religious or tribal affiliations.
His remarks come in response to some religious and political figures pushing for a Christian to be elected president, citing the majority Christian population in Ghana.
Dr. Prempeh dismissed these suggestions, pointing out that since independence, Ghana has elected leaders from diverse religious and ethnic backgrounds, purely based on their leadership qualities.
He expressed strong confidence in Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s presidential bid, noting that Bawumia’s proven competence, track record, and integrity make him a strong contender.
Dr. Prempeh also highlighted Bawumia’s visibility and success as Vice President, particularly in spearheading impactful national interventions.

At the event, Hon. Collins Adomako Mensah, Member of Parliament for Afigya Kwabre North and Deputy Energy Minister, also praised the accomplishments of the NPP government, particularly in the sectors of energy, education, health, and infrastructure within the constituency.
He urged voters to back Dr. Bawumia and the NPP’s parliamentary candidates in the upcoming elections.
As part of the engagement, Dr. Prempeh commissioned a new ultramodern Sports Complex at Ahenkro, funded by the Ghana National Gas Company Ltd.
The ceremony featured an inaugural football match between a team led by former national team captain Stephen Appiah and the Afigya Kwabre North 11, with the former team winning 3-1.
