MTN Ghana has announced bold plans to position itself at the forefront of Ghana’s fast-growing gaming ecosystem, with a focus on empowering local developers, driving innovation, and integrating gaming into its broader digital strategy.
Speaking in an exclusive interview on the sidelines of the Africa Tech Festival 2025 in Cape Town, South Africa, Ibrahim Misto, Chief Digital Officer of MTN Ghana, said the company intends to play a leading role in shaping the country’s gaming industry.
“We are working on how MTN can lead the gaming ecosystem within Ghana,” Misto revealed. “We want to help local gaming developers get easy and fast access to our customer base, go to market quickly, and share revenues with them. It’s a win-win strategy at the end of the day.”
According to Misto, MTN’s approach is anchored in the belief that digital entertainment—particularly gaming—will play a central role in the future of telecoms and youth engagement.
“Gaming has many aspects,” he said, “but one of the most important for us is educational gaming. We are focusing on games that help children of different ages learn in fun and interactive ways, as well as games for adults that help keep the brain active.”
Building the foundation for a digital future
Misto explained that MTN Ghana’s massive infrastructure investments are laying the groundwork for this digital expansion.
“This year alone, we are investing about $250 million, and by 2021, we had already invested over $1 billion,” he noted.
“We are building the foundation of connectivity for tomorrow—connecting every home in Ghana, providing fibre, content, and security solutions to make life easier for our customers.”
He emphasised that MTN’s goal is to create a holistic digital ecosystem where connectivity, entertainment, education, and convenience seamlessly intersect.
“We want to touch all aspects of our customers’ digital lives,” Misto said.
“That means simplifying our offerings and improving customer experience, especially for Gen Z, who demand services at their fingertips—easy to access and fast.”
Gaming as a growth frontier
Ghana’s online-gaming market has a strong growth outlook, supported by forecast of CAGR 11.2%
MTN plans to leverage this momentum by partnering with game developers, offering them a platform to reach millions of users, monetise content, and scale sustainably. “We want to make sure local developers are part of the digital revolution, not left behind,” Misto said.
Africa Tech Festival: A hub of innovation
Misto made the remarks after delivering a presentation titled “The Future of Telecoms: Investment Priorities for Growth and Innovation – The Case of Ghana” at the Africa Tech Festival 2025, where he also participated in a high-level panel discussion on “Strategic Priorities for the Future of Telco: Partnerships, Investment, and Opportunities.”
He praised the annual event as a vital platform for advancing Africa’s digital transformation.
“Events like the Africa Tech Festival bring together policymakers, investors, and innovators to exchange ideas and forge collaborations that drive the continent forward,” he said.
Now in its 28th edition, the Africa Tech Festival—held from November 11 to 13, 2025, at the Cape Town International Convention Centre—remains the continent’s premier gathering for technology and innovation.
This year’s festival attracted over 15,000 global participants, 300 exhibitors, and 450 speakers, uniting four flagship programmes: AfricaCom, AfricaTech, AfricaIgnite, and The AI Summit Cape Town.
The 2025 theme, “Responsible and Inclusive Growth,” underscored how connectivity, artificial intelligence, entrepreneurship, and policy are shaping Africa’s digital transformation.
