Manchester United have sacked head coach Ruben Amorim after just over a year in charge, the club has confirmed.
The Portuguese manager, who was appointed in November 2024, departs Old Trafford following a turbulent spell marked by inconsistent results and mounting pressure over the team’s performances.
United are currently sixth in the Premier League, a position the club’s hierarchy considers below expectations.
In a statement, the club said the decision was taken in the best interests of the team, with the aim of giving Manchester United the strongest possible chance of improving their league finish for the remainder of the season.
Amorim’s tenure showed flashes of promise, including a run to the Europa League final, but those moments failed to translate into sustained domestic success.
League form remained uneven, and the team struggled to establish a clear identity under his leadership.
Reports of internal tensions, particularly around recruitment decisions and Amorim’s public comments on structural issues at the club, are understood to have contributed to the breakdown in relations with the board.
Former midfielder Darren Fletcher has been placed in temporary charge of the first team while the club begins the process of appointing a new permanent head coach.
Manchester United thanked Amorim for his service and wished him well in his future career as the club once again turns to rebuilding in search of stability and success.
