Outgoing Commandant of the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), Major General Richard Addo Gyane, has bowed out of active service with a call for continued commitment and innovation in the Ghana Armed Forces.
He officially handed over command to Air Commodore David Anetey Akrong during a change of command ceremony held at the Centre on Thursday.
Major General Gyane recounted his humble beginnings, his unexpected entry into the Ghana Armed Forces, and the long path of perseverance that resulted in his rise to the top echelons of military leadership.
He expressed immense pride in being the first non-infantry officer to head key roles such as the Army Combat Training School, the Department of Plans, and later, the KAIPTC.
“This ceremony marks the close of a long chapter defined by perseverance, loyalty and dedication,
I look back with satisfaction, knowing that I gave my all in every assignment and contributed to breaking barriers that previously held back others like me.” he said.
Major General Gyane, a professional engineer and recipient of the 2023 Leadership Award by the Chartered Institute of Leadership and Governance, highlighted his instrumental role in expanding the KAIPTC’s infrastructure, academic programming, and international partnerships.
Under his leadership, the Centre became a board member of the globally renowned Challenges Forum, and launched several innovative initiatives, including the establishment of the Women, Youth, Peace and Security Institute.
“When I assumed office in 2022, the centre was recovering from the COVID-19 crisis. Infrastructure was in need of rehabilitation, and finances were constrained,
But with dedication and support from partners, we achieved significant progress, from building a new Sea Block to launching a digital learning unit and expanding our training programs.” he noted.
He paid special tribute to his wife and children, describing them as his “soldiers” who stood by him through turbulent times.
“My wife has been more than a partner—she’s been a mentor, my counsel, and a pillar,” he added.
Major General Gyane urged the youth to remain steadfast and principled.
“Be loyal, but never hesitate to speak out when things are not right. Hold on to your convictions. The path to success may be long, but never trade your integrity.” he stressed.
He expressed confidence in his successor, Air Commodore Akrong, urging staff and stakeholders to accord him the same support.
“I wish you every success. Tap into the talents of all around you. Leadership is never a one-man job.”bhe said.
Quoting General Douglas MacArthur, he said, “Old soldiers never die, they just fade away. Though I may be gone in body, my spirit and prayers remain with the Centre I have grown to love.”
The ceremony, attended by military dignitaries, KAIPTC staff, development partners and family, was not only a farewell but a celebration of legacy, leadership, and dedication to Ghana’s peace and security architecture.
