President John Dramani Mahama has ordered the immediate cancellation of fuel allowances and allocations for all political appointees, as part of a broader government initiative to cut costs.

The directive was announced in a statement signed by Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu.

According to the statement, the measure is aimed at reducing government expenditure and reallocating public funds to critical priority areas.

This latest move follows earlier cost-saving actions by the Mahama administration, including a downsizing of government through fewer ministerial and staff appointments, as well as the suspension of satellite TV subscriptions in government offices.

“The President believes that leadership must also share in the sacrifices being asked of the citizenry,” the statement noted.

The directive is part of ongoing efforts to promote fiscal discipline and ensure the prudent use of state resources amid prevailing economic challenges.

Earlier, Mahama reaffirmed his determination to impose strict sanctions on any government appointees who flout the newly established Code of Conduct for public officials.

Unveiled on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, the Code forms a central pillar of the administration’s wider initiative to instil professionalism, decency, and ethical responsibility within the public sector.

Its implementation underscores the government’s commitment to restoring public confidence in state institutions.

In an address on Wednesday, May 5, 2025, Mahama delivered a stern warning, underscoring the seriousness with which he intends to uphold the Code.

The Code sets out detailed ethical obligations for officeholders, including a prohibition on the use of public funds for festive hampers and a ceiling of GH₵20,000 on acceptable gift values.

Aimed at curbing misuse of public resources, the measures are expected to enhance transparency, foster integrity, and strengthen accountability within government.

Could Mahama’s action of scrapping fuel allowances, code of conduct and his several warnings to all appointees show that the government is taking the country to the next phase of governance?
