President John Dramani Mahama had paid a courtesy call on Sheikh Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, the National Chief Imam, at his residence at Fadama in Accra.
The President’s visit, which comes ahead of Saturday night’s Maulid (a festival marking the birth of Prophet Mohammed) was to greet the National Chief Imam and to let him know that the President would not be able to attend the event because of his scheduled travel.
President Mahama was billed to leave Accra on Saturday night for the United States for the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Meeting and will not be available to attend the Maulid in person.
Mahama also told Sheikh Sharubutu that a delegation would attend the Maulid on his behalf, adding that he had already submitted his donation to support the event.
He disclosed that during the closed-door meeting with the Imam, he was blessed by the Chief Imam.
Mahama went on to express his gratitude to the Chief Imam for his support and wished him a long life.
President Mahama is scheduled to deliver his address to the world body on Thursday, September 25, 2025.
His packed itinerary in New York includes significant diplomatic and economic engagements. In his role as the African Union’s champion for financial institutions, President Mahama will host two major side events.
His schedule also features crucial bilateral meetings with the United Nations Secretary-General, several heads of state, and global leaders, including the President of the Rockefeller Foundation.
