President John Dramani Mahama has called on contractors working on the Ofankor-Nsawam road project to stick to the timeline and ensure completion by the end of the second quarter of 2026.

Visiting the site on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, alongside the Minister of Roads, Mahama expressed confidence in the progress made on the long-delayed Ofankor-Nsawam project but stressed the importance of sustaining momentum while minimising inconvenience to motorists.

“I can see that drivers are happy now, and I hope that from now till you finish the project, you will maintain a smooth flow of traffic even as you are working so that you don’t impede the flow of traffic,” he told the contractors.

He further noted, “So we will hold you to your work. You say by the end of the second quarter next year you should be finished.”

His comments come at a time of heightened public concern over the condition of major highways and worsening traffic congestion, particularly along critical commuter routes such as Ofankor-Nsawam.

The Ofankor–Nsawam dual carriageway, a major artery linking the capital city to parts of the Eastern Region, has fallen into an alarming state of disrepair, leaving commuters frustrated and calling for immediate government intervention.

Once regarded as a vital stretch of road facilitating the daily movement of thousands, the carriageway is now riddled with deep potholes, eroded shoulders, and sections of incomplete construction that pose serious safety hazards.

Heavy traffic congestion, frequent vehicle breakdowns, and increased travel times have become the norm for both private and commercial drivers who ply the route daily.

Construction works on the dual carriageway, which were initially launched with high hopes of easing traffic and boosting trade between the Greater Accra and Eastern regions, have stalled in several sections.

However, the government officially commenced construction works on the long-awaited Pokuase to Nsawam highway project following the release of GH¢809 million to the contractor.
