Ibrahim Mahama, founder of Engineers and Planners and Dzata Cement Limited, has honoured Ghanaian boxing icon Azumah Nelson with a brand-new Toyota Fortuner and an undisclosed cash gift in recognition of the sports legend’s enduring legacy.
The surprise presentation took place on Monday, June 16, 2025, at Mahama’s office, following a courtesy visit by a delegation that included Sharaf Mahama—CEO of Legacy Rise Sports and son of President John Dramani Mahama—and British-Nigerian heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua.
The group had just wrapped up their involvement in the highly anticipated Battle of the Beasts boxing event, held on Friday, June 13, 2025, at the Bukom Boxing Arena.
Earlier that day, they had paid a visit to President John Dramani Mahama at the Jubilee House before proceeding to meet Ibrahim Mahama to express their gratitude for his support.
Describing Azumah Nelson as “arguably Africa’s greatest boxer,” Mahama said the gesture was a tribute not only to Nelson’s historic achievements in the ring as a three-time world champion, but also to his lasting impact on sports development and youth mentorship in Ghana.
The moment was both symbolic and emotional, with friends and dignitaries looking on as Mr Mahama handed over the car keys to the visibly moved boxing legend.
“I’m deeply grateful to you, Ibrahim Mahama, and to Sharaf Mahama for this incredible surprise,” Nelson said. “I wasn’t expecting this at all. I’m just here to support my son Sharaf, who’s showing a strong passion for promoting the sport I love.”
The honour comes at a time when Nelson’s legacy continues to inspire younger generations, and his mentorship in Ghana’s boxing community has solidified his place not only in the nation’s sporting history but also in the hearts of Ghanaians.
Among those present at the event were members of Anthony Joshua’s team; sports entrepreneur Yaw Sakyi Afari of RITE Sports Services; businessman and close associate Henry Quarshie; and representatives from Legacy Rise Sports, along with several of Mahama’s friends.
The Battle of the Beasts event, which garnered international attention with Anthony Joshua’s participation, marked a milestone in Ghanaian boxing, showcasing efforts to elevate the country’s profile on the global sporting stage.
