President John Dramani Mahama has inaugurated a seven-member National Economic Dialogue (NED) Planning Committee as part of his 120-day Social Contract with Ghanaians.
This initiative is designed to tackle pressing economic challenges while laying the foundation for a high-growth, inclusive, and resilient economy.
The NED committee, chaired by renowned economist Dr. Ishmael Yamson, has been given a four-week deadline to submit its report. The team will organize a high-level dialogue to foster consultation and consensus on critical policies aimed at transforming Ghana’s economic landscape.

High-Caliber Team to Lead the Dialogue
The committee comprises a distinguished group of professionals with extensive experience in economics, finance, governance, and business.
Alongside Dr. Yamson, the team includes Dr. K.Y. Amoako, a globally recognized economist and development expert, Professor John Gatsi, a respected academic in finance and economic management, Mohammed Samara, an infrastructure and energy specialist, Nelly Mireku, a legal expert focused on governance and policy, Anthony Sarpong, a chartered accountant with a deep understanding of fiscal systems, Ernest De-Graft Egyir, a business strategist with experience in economic planning.

Objectives of the National Economic Dialogue
According to Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Acting Spokesperson to the President, the NED will serve as a platform to address Ghana’s development challenges while communicating the true state of the economy to citizens and stakeholders.
“The NED will offer a platform for dialogue and consultation on the country’s pressing development challenges,” Kwakye Ofosu noted in a statement.
“It will also discuss policy trade-offs and build consensus on reforms needed to transform Ghana into a high-growth, inclusive, and resilient economy.”

Focus on homegrown solutions
The committee’s mandate extends to developing a homegrown fiscal consolidation program to guide national budgeting.
This programme will identify structural reforms and establish policy priorities to reset and stabilize Ghana’s economy.
Key areas of focus will include fiscal sustainability, structural transformation, and measures to enhance economic resilience. The dialogue aims to generate actionable strategies that align with Ghana’s long-term developmental aspirations.

A timely intervention amid economic challenges
With Ghana facing significant fiscal and economic pressures, the National Economic Dialogue represents a timely intervention.
The dialogue seeks to address issues such as public debt management, economic diversification, and social equity in resource allocation.
The initiative underscores the Mahama administration’s commitment to tackling economic difficulties through a collaborative and transparent approach.
By engaging a diverse group of experts and stakeholders, the NED aims to build trust and consensus on the path forward.

A roadmap for inclusive growth
The committee’s final recommendations are expected to provide a roadmap for achieving inclusive growth and sustainable development.
The high-level dialogue will be instrumental in crafting policies that balance immediate economic needs with long-term national priorities.
As the committee begins its work, all eyes are on its ability to deliver meaningful solutions within its four-week timeframe.
The outcomes of the National Economic Dialogue are anticipated to serve as a cornerstone for Ghana’s economic reset, setting the stage for a more robust and resilient future.
