President John Dramani Mahama has arrived in Abuja, Nigeria, to take part in the 68th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, scheduled for Sunday, December 14, 2025, at the Presidential Villa.
The summit will feature a special debate on the future of the ECOWAS Community and will bring together regional leaders to discuss key issues such as political stability, security cooperation and economic integration.

President Mahama is expected to participate in a closed-door session focused on the strategic direction of ECOWAS, emerging security challenges and efforts to strengthen economic integration among member states.
Major agenda items include deliberations on the future of the Community, the presentation of the 2025 Annual Report on the State of the Community, updates on regional security and mediation initiatives, the political transition in Guinea, and a review of the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme (ETLS).

The meeting will conclude with the adoption of a final communiqué and a joint press conference.
Earlier in the week, the ECOWAS Council of Ministers meeting in Abuja unanimously endorsed President Mahama as the sole ECOWAS candidate for Chairperson of the African Union when the rotational slot shifts to West Africa in 2027.

The endorsement is expected to receive formal approval from the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government on Sunday.
