Kumasi Asante Kotoko Sporting Club have unveiled members of its playing unit that will be part of the team’s contingent in South Africa, scheduled to compete in the Toyota Cup.
Kotoko are set to take on South African giants Kaizer Chiefs in this year’s Toyota Cup on Saturday, July 26, and the Porcupine Warriors have announced a 25-man list to compete in the game.
The squad announcement was made on Tuesday, July 22 and comes in the wake of Kotoko announcing its captains for the upcoming season. Congolese defender Samba “O’Neil”Gilbani has been named as the club’s captain.
Kotoko’s travelling party is headlined by the likes of goalkeeper Mohammed Camara, Peter Amidu Acquah, Emmanuel Antwi, Kwame Opoku, Albert Amoah and recently signed Zackaria Fuseini, Joseph Amoah and Lord Hilary Adabo.
Head coach Abdul Karim Zito, who had the interim tag on his role removed and replaced by a permanent deal that runs for two years, will lead the team in the pre-season friendly as Kotoko prepare to compete in the CAF Confederation Cup.
The second Toyota Cup promises to be a cracker, especially after Chiefs got hammered 4-0 by Tanzania’s Young Africans in last year’s tournament. The Glamour Boys will be desperate to bounce back with a proper performance against the Ghanaian heavyweights.
Both clubs come into this match on a high after winning their domestic cup competitions. Chiefs lifted the Nedbank Cup while Kotoko claimed Ghana’s FA Cup, earning both teams places in next season’s CAF Confederation Cup.
The Toyota Cup started in 2024 as part of a three-year deal that builds on Chiefs’ partnership with the car manufacturer, which began back in 2021.
This clash will bring back memories of when these two African football powerhouses last met in Durban during the 2001 Vodacom Challenge, adding some nostalgic flavour to what’s already shaping up to be a tasty encounter.
