The government plans to rename Kotoka International Airport as Accra International Airport, Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has disclosed.
According to Ayariga, who doubles as the Majority Leader in Parliament, the proposed name change forms part of broader efforts to rebrand key national institutions in a way that reflects Ghana’s identity and values.
He explained that the move is intended to align the country’s main international gateway more closely with the capital city it serves.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament, Ayariga said discussions around the renaming are ongoing and will follow the appropriate legal and administrative processes before any final decision is taken.
He stated that this was part of the outlined bills and regulations expected to be considered by the House during the current meeting.
Ayariga said the Minister for Transport will present the bill to seek parliamentary approval for the proposed change.
Kotoka International Airport, named after Lieutenant General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, has long been a subject of public debate, with calls from some sections of the public to change its name due to historical considerations.
The announcement has already sparked mixed reactions, with supporters arguing that the new name would promote national unity and modern branding, while critics insist the issue requires wider consultation.
