Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie has reaffirmed the critical importance of maintaining an independent and impartial judiciary as she addressed newly sworn-in judicial officers at a ceremony in Accra on Monday, November 17, 2025.
Speaking at the swearing-in event, the Chief Justice emphasised that the strength of any democratic society rests largely on the credibility of its justice system.
He noted that judges must remain free from political influence, personal bias, and external pressure to deliver fair and consistent justice.
According to him, an independent judiciary not only protects the constitutional order but also enhances public confidence in the rule of law.
“Our judiciary must be independent, impartial, and accessible. It must not serve the powerful or the connected at the expense of the weak and the vulnerable. It must resist any incursions on its freedoms but also embrace accountability, transparency, and continuous reform,” he stated.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie urged the newly appointed judges to uphold the highest ethical standards as they carry out their responsibilities.
He reminded them that every decision they make has far-reaching consequences for individuals, institutions, and the nation at large.
He also highlighted the need for continuous professional development, stressing that the legal landscape is constantly evolving.
The Chief Justice further called for improved collaboration between the judiciary and other arms of government, without compromising the courts’ independence.
He reiterated that safeguarding judicial independence is a shared responsibility, requiring respect, transparency, and adherence to constitutional boundaries.
The newly sworn-in Chief Justice expressed readiness to serve with dedication and impartiality.
The ceremony marks another step in Ghana’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its justice delivery system and uphold democratic values.
