A Computer Science student of the University for Development Studies (UDS), Nyankpala campus, Salifu Nurudeen, has been sentenced to death for murdering his fellow student, Wumpini Mohammed Zakiu.

The crime occurred in September last year and stemmed from a romantic relationship dispute.

Nurudeen’s girlfriend, also a UDS student, had ended her relationship with him and started dating the victim.

On September 25, 2024, Wumpini’s body was discovered with multiple stab wounds, and his phone was missing.

The police cybercrime unit later tracked the phone to Nurudeen’s location, where it was found hidden under his bed.

Evidence revealed that Nurudeen had sent messages from Wumpini’s phone, one pretending to break up with his girlfriend, and another sent to Wumpini’s friend.

He was arrested after being lured to Jubilee Park.

Nurudeen admitted to sending the text messages but denied murdering the victim.

However, in June this year, the Police arrested three men in connection with the suspected murder of a young woman at Vutideke, a community near Yeji in the Pru East District of the Bono East Region.

The police arrested the three suspects, including 31-year-old Hayford Boateng, believed to be the boyfriend of the deceased, and his two alleged accomplices, Kojo Emmanuel, 28, and Michael Kabutey, 34.

According to information, the trio was apprehended while attempting to transport the woman’s lifeless body to Yeji.

The deceased is believed to have been a student at the Yeji Midwifery Training School. The suspects were reportedly using an unregistered Hyundai private saloon car with the number DV 8388Y-2025.

A police source at the Yeji station confirmed that the arrests were made following a tip-off from residents who found the trio’s behaviour suspicious.

The swift intervention by local authorities led to the interception of the vehicle and the discovery of the body.

The incident occurred on the afternoon of Tuesday, June 10, 2025. The body has since been deposited at the mortuary for preservation and an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Police say all three suspects are in custody and assisting with ongoing investigations. Authorities are urging the public to remain calm while assuring them that justice will be pursued.

The tragic incident has sparked concern and outrage among locals, with many calling for thorough investigations and accountability. More details are expected to emerge as the case unfolds.

This incident adds to the growing concern about intimate partner violence in Ghana, sparking fresh conversations about mental health, domestic abuse, and gun control.

Authorities are expected to release more details as the investigation continues. In the meantime, the nation watches closely as one of its digital stars faces the possibility of criminal prosecution for a crime that has left a young woman dead and a community in mourning.

The Tamale High Court found Nurudeen guilty of murder, and he was subsequently sentenced to death.
