The 2024 vice presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, has revealed that he has been invited by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) for questioning.
Speaking to journalists in Accra on June 4, 2025, Dr. Opoku Prempeh—former Minister of Education and later Minister of Energy—disclosed that the probe concerns his time at the Ministry of Education.
According to him, the NIB inquiry relates to administrative activities during his term, although he emphasised that official records are available to clarify any uncertainties.
“As I speak to you now, I have been invited by the NIB on two different occasions to answer some questions from my time as Education Minister—some issues I don’t even remember. But the records are there to show,” NAPO stated.
The revelation has sparked significant public interest as the 2024 general elections approach, with NAPO invited by the NIB to play a key role in the NPP’s campaign as the running mate to the party’s presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, a prominent figure in Ghanaian politics, served as Ghana’s Minister of Education from January 2017 to January 2021 under the leadership of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. During his tenure, he played a key role in implementing major educational reforms, including the landmark Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy.
In 2021, Dr. Opoku Prempeh transitioned to become the Minister of Energy, where he led strategic initiatives in Ghana’s energy sector until July 2024.
He resigned from the position to focus on the upcoming 2024 Ghana General Elections, following his official selection as the Vice Presidential running mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer.
His selection as Bawumia’s running mate positions him as a central figure in the NPP’s campaign, bringing both governance experience and political influence to the ticket as the party seeks victory in Ghana’s December 2024 elections.
