President John Dramani Mahama has honoured three Ghana Air Force officers who tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash, awarding them posthumous promotions in recognition of their service and sacrifice.
The officers, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, were aboard a military helicopter on its way to Obuasi when it crashed under undisclosed circumstances.
Under the posthumous promotions, Mahama promoted the Air officers. Squadron Leader Anala has been elevated to Wing Commander; Flying Officer Twum-Ampadu promoted to Flight Lieutenant; and Sergeant Mensah promoted to Flight Sergeant.
The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, has been described as a significant loss to the Ghana Armed Forces and the nation.
Mahama, speaking at a solemn ceremony attended by grieving families, military officials, and government representatives, commended the officers for their dedication and bravery.
He described them as heroes who served Ghana with honour until their last breath, noting that their commitment to duty exemplified the highest values of military service.
The posthumous promotions elevate the ranks of the fallen officers, ensuring that their contributions are formally acknowledged in Ghana’s military records. Families of the officers were presented with insignias and certificates reflecting the new ranks.
The Ghana Armed Forces has pledged to continue supporting the bereaved families and to honour the legacy of the officers through dedicated remembrance initiatives. Investigations into the cause of the helicopter crash are ongoing.
The tragic event has reignited calls for enhanced safety measures and modernised equipment for the Ghana Armed Forces, as stakeholders emphasise the importance of safeguarding the lives of those who serve.
The three were part of the eight who died in the helicopter crash, including some government officials.
On board the Z-9 helicopter were Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Minister of Defence, and Alhaji Dr Murtala Mohammed, Member of Parliament for Tamale Central and Minister of Environment, Science, and Technology.
Others were Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress; and Samuel Aboagye, Deputy Director-General of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).
