In a match billed as Ghana’s “El-Clásico,” traditional rivals Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko battled to a goalless draw at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Ghana Premier League’s most iconic fixture ended without a goal but not without drama, as both sides struggled to break the deadlock in front of a spirited, though less-than-packed, crowd.
This was a clash not only of giants but of redemption and pride. Hearts of Oak entered the tie as the underdogs, having lost their last three encounters against Kotoko and enduring an underwhelming season.
Kotoko, perched higher on the league table, were expected to impose themselves. Yet, despite the buildup, the game was far from a classic.
Kotoko threaten early, Hearts respond
Kotoko looked the more assured side in the early stages, creating two decent opportunities within the first 10 minutes from corner kicks, but their headers were off target.
Hearts goalkeeper Benjamin Asare had to be sharp, making key interventions to keep the Phobians in the game.
A free-kick by Kotoko’s Andrews Ntim Manu in the 13th minute drifted wide after a strong run from Albert Amoah, and in the 16th minute, Kotoko cried out for a penalty when striker Kwame Opoku went down in the box under pressure—but the referee waved play on.
The game’s tempo shifted slightly in favour of Hearts of Oak around the half-hour mark.
A defensive mix-up nearly cost Kotoko in the 33rd minute, and two minutes later, Martin Karikari’s darting run was stopped by a timely challenge from Patrick Asiedu.
From the ensuing corner, Hearts came closest to scoring in the first half, with a header cleared off the line.
Moments of controversy, but no goals
There was controversy in the 40th minute when Kotoko’s Wisdom Fernando Bassey dispossessed a Hearts defender and looked to be clean through on goal, only for the referee to call back play for a foul.
That decision drew protests from the Kotoko bench and fans, who felt the striker had fairly won the ball.
The second half opened with renewed intensity from Hearts of Oak.
Just two minutes after the restart, Stephen Appiah Asare was played through on goal by Hussein Mohammed but failed to beat Kotoko goalkeeper Mohammed Camara, firing straight at him.
Kotoko responded through substitute Saaka Dauda, who nearly found the opener with a low shot that rolled inches past the far post.
As the game wore on, both sides looked to force a breakthrough, but the quality in the final third was sorely lacking.
Late chances, missed moments
Hearts of Oak pressed in the final stages, with Albert Amoah coming close in the 81st minute as his cross-shot zipped across the face of goal, needing only a touch. Kotoko, sensing the momentum slipping, launched several attacks of their own.
Albert Amoah nearly found the net in the 80th minute, creating a yard of space in the box, but his shot failed to trouble the keeper.
In a final push, Kotoko pounded down the right wing with a flurry of crosses, all of which were safely collected by Hearts’ dependable shot-stopper, Benjamin Asare, who was arguably the standout performer on the day.
Stalemate leaves title hopes hanging
The result leaves Asante Kotoko in fourth place with 51 points, while Hearts of Oak remain sixth on 46 points.
The draw all but extinguishes Hearts’ slim hopes of challenging for the title, while Kotoko’s quest for a top-three finish remains on track.
After four straight defeats to their fiercest rivals, Hearts of Oak will take solace in having finally avoided another loss.
But the quality of the game, once a must-watch on the Ghanaian football calendar, left fans wanting more.
What was once the most passionate, most followed, and most dramatic encounter in Ghana football now struggles to capture its former glory.
Sunday’s goalless draw—arguably one of the least entertaining Super Clashes in recent memory—may be remembered more for its missed opportunities than its moments of magic.
