Heart of Lions handed Asante Kotoko a massive blow in the title race after a commanding 3-1 win at the Kpando Sports Stadium in a Ghana Premier League clash that left the Porcupines frustrated.
Kotoko, who had trailed leaders Medeama by eight points following Friday’s defeat to Nations FC, failed to capitalise on their rivals’ slip, falling behind early in the encounter.
After a cautious start, the Lions broke the deadlock in the 35th minute when Seedorf Asante slotted home a brilliant finish, sending the home fans into raptures.
Just before halftime, Ali Fawzi doubled the advantage with a crisp strike, leaving Kotoko with a mountain to climb.
The Porcupines fought back in the second half, earning a lifeline through a penalty converted by Samba O’Neil around the hour mark.
But any hopes of a comeback were dashed in the 70th minute when Michael Ephson restored Lions’ two-goal cushion, sealing a memorable victory for the hosts.
The win allowed Heart of Lions to bounce back after a disappointing loss to Bechem United in their previous fixture, while Kotoko now sit third on the league table with 35 points, five clear of the Lions in seventh.
Kotoko will now turn their attention to the highly anticipated super clash against Hearts of Oak at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, while Lions travel to face Berekum Chelsea in their next outing.
