The Government of Ghana has fully settled all outstanding claims arrears owed to healthcare providers under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), totalling GH¢603 million as of December 2024.

This significant milestone underscores the government’s unwavering commitment to timely payments and the sustainability of the country’s health financing system, according to Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series in Accra, the Minister stated that the clearance of these arrears reflects the administration’s determination to honour its obligations to health service providers.

The Minister of State in Charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, in an X post confirming the payment, said “All NHIS claims arrears totalling GHS 603 million as of December 2024 have been fully settled. This milestone demonstrates the government’s steadfast dedication to timely payments and fulfilling its obligations to healthcare providers.”

Kwakye Ofosu emphasised that the government will maintain this payment discipline to prevent future accumulation of arrears. He noted that the NHIS remains a critical pillar of Ghana’s Universal Health Coverage (UHC) agenda and pledged continued investment in its efficiency and financial viability.

The announcement has been widely welcomed by healthcare providers and industry stakeholders, who view it as a major boost for the health sector and an important step toward quality service delivery.

Regulation 38 of the National Health Insurance Regulations requires that a claim for payment of health service submitted to the scheme shall be paid within four weeks after receipt of the claim from the health care facility unless there is legal impediment.
