Ghana’s AFCON hopes hang in the balance with Sudan draw

Ghana’s hopes of qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) now hinge on their return fixture against Sudan in Libya, where a victory could boost Sudan’s chances of securing second place in Group F.
The Black Stars were held to a frustrating goalless draw by the Falcons of Sudan in their third match of the 2025 AFCON qualifiers at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances, Ghana was unable to break the deadlock, leaving them in third place in Group F with two points from three games.

Chances missed, Sudanese goalkeeper shines
Ghana started the match strongly, with Alexander Djiku almost giving the Black Stars an early lead.
His header, however, struck the crossbar, much to the relief of the Sudanese defense.
Sudanese goalkeeper Mohammed Mustafa was the standout performer, making crucial saves to keep the Falcons in the game, including stopping an 11th-minute shot from Ernest Nuamah and a close-range effort from Mohammed Kudus in the second half.

Sudan holds firm, Ghana struggles to score
Despite sustained pressure from the Black Stars, Sudan’s defense held firm. Ghana created several chances, with Djiku, Kudus, and substitute Inaki Williams all coming close to scoring.
The Sudanese team, under the guidance of Kwesi Appiah, remained resolute in defense, while their occasional counterattacks kept the Ghanaian backline on alert.
Sudan threatens on the counterattack
Sudan’s Falcons had a few threatening moments of their own. Yacoub came close to a surprise goal in the 35th minute, and Malik nearly snatched a lead for Sudan with a well-taken free-kick in the second half, but Ghana’s goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi made a brilliant save to deny him.

With the draw, Ghana stays in third place with two points, while Sudan moves to second with four points.
Group leaders Angola, who have six points, will face bottom-placed Niger in the next round.
