Kobina Tahir (KT) Hammond, has declared that Ghanaians risk facing hardship if former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is not elected President in the 2028 general elections.

According to the former Adansi-Asokwa legislator, Dr. Bawumia possesses the vision, competence, and commitment needed to transform the country’s economy and improve the lives of citizens.

He cautioned that rejecting Bawumia’s presidential bid would be a setback for Ghana’s progress.

Speaking at a public gathering, KT Hammond stressed that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has invested significantly in policies aimed at stabilizing the economy and creating opportunities.

He argued that continuity under Dr. Bawumia’s leadership is the surest way to consolidate these gains.

He described as “madness” suggestions that Dr. Bawumia cannot be President because he is a Muslim.

“Have you monitored Bawumia’s capabilities and hard work? It’s madness to say Bawumia is a Muslim, so he can’t be a President. We will suffer if Bawumia is not elected as President,” he stated.

Hammond also dismissed critics who question the track record of Dr. Bawumia, insisting that his efforts in digitization, financial inclusion, and economic management have already laid a strong foundation for growth.

His comments come as internal party discussions intensify over succession and the NPP’s strategy for the 2028 elections.

NPP presidential race in January

The NPP presidential primary is scheduled to take place on Saturday, January 31, 2026.

The Committee announced that the following individuals, who had earlier picked up nomination forms, have now officially filed to contest:

  1. Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong
  2. Kennedy Ohene Agyapong
  3. Dr. Bryan Acheampong
