The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts has announced that the Government of Ghana is encouraging all citizens — as well as friends of Ghana at home and abroad — to dedicate every Wednesday to wearing Fugu (Batakari) in its various styles and designs.
The directive, signed by Minister Ablah Dzifa Gomashie on February 10, seeks to preserve, promote and celebrate Ghana’s rich cultural heritage while projecting the country’s identity with pride on the global stage.
“On behalf of the Government and the good people of Ghana, and in furtherance of our collective commitment to preserve, promote, and celebrate Ghana’s rich cultural heritage, the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts wishes to inform the general public of Government’s decision to encourage all Ghanaians, as well as friends of Ghana, home and abroad, to dedicate every Wednesday to the wearing of Fugu (Batakari), in all its diverse forms, designs, and expressions, complemented by its distinctive and beautiful accessories,” the statement said.
According to the Ministry, the weekly celebration of Fugu is expected to generate notable social and economic benefits nationwide.
These include empowering local weavers, designers, artisans and traders across the value chain, while expanding business opportunities, job creation and commercial activity throughout the country.
The government believes that a collective embrace of Fugu will strengthen national unity, stimulate the creative economy and stand as a visible symbol of Ghana’s cultural confidence and self-expression.
