The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, has delivered a stinging assessment of the illegal mining situation, commonly known as galamsey, asserting that the scale of the crisis under the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration led by President John Mahama is worse than anything during the time of the NPP in office.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra, Kodua-Frimpong said “Any reasonable person in this country will know that the state of galamsey is worse than it was in the NPP administration.

“It is clear that galamsey has become worse, and that this administration, of course, you have members of parliament who belong to the NDC, you have national officers from the NDC,  the region, constituencies, and even their branch who are involved in galamsey.”

He said it is not surprising that the security agencies are struggling to deal with that issue because when they make efforts, they are threatened by the powers that be in this government.

Kodua-Frimpong urged civil society to raise its voice, arguing that the damage now being inflicted on Ghana’s water bodies and forest reserves must not go unchecked.

“But for us, as a new patriotic party, because we care so much about this country, we mean well for this country.  If Excellency President John Dramani Mahama sees the need and the reason to reach out to us, for us to have a proper roundtable discussion to combat this menace once and for all, sadly, what comes after me has to address the issue. And from the way things are going, it’s clear that Excellency Jomarama is still in the fight against galamsey, he stated.

He warned of the long-term environmental, social and economic consequences if the trend is allowed to continue.

His remarks come amid growing concerns about the surge in galamsey activity across multiple regions, and as the NDC government faces pressure to demonstrate stronger regulatory and enforcement responses.

“Any reasonable person in this country will admit that the state of galamsey is now even worse than it was under the NPP administration.
