The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has temporarily suspended the ongoing recruitment exercise at the El-Wak Stadium in Accra following the deadly stampede that occurred on Wednesday morning.

According to officials, the suspension—effective only for today—comes with a revised schedule dividing the exercise into separate segments for the Navy, Army, and Air Force.

The adjustment aims to prevent any further loss of life during the 2025/2026 recruitment process.

Authorities announced that the Air Force screening will resume on Thursday, November 13, 2025, while the Navy and Army screenings are now set for Friday and Saturday, respectively.

Officials further noted that the overwhelming turnout of applicants had disrupted internet connectivity at the venue, contributing to delays and confusion that led to the temporary suspension of the exercise.

In a statement, the GAF said the decision was made to allow for a comprehensive review of safety protocols following the tragic incident that resulted in multiple casualties.

GAF officials confirmed that at least six potential recruits died and several others sustained injuries after a stampede occurred at approximately 6:20 a.m., when a surge of applicants breached security barriers and rushed through the gates. In total, 28 casualties have been confirmed.

“A tragic stampede at the El-Wak Stadium, where the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) is recruiting soldiers, has led to the death of six potential recruits,” the GAF confirmed. “Many others have been injured and are receiving medical attention.”

In a separate statement, the Ghana Armed Forces expressed deep regret over the incident, which occurred prior to the commencement of the 2025/2026 recruitment exercise.

According to the GAF, “Preliminary investigation indicates that the stampede was triggered by an unexpected surge of applicants who breached security protocols and rushed into the gate ahead of the scheduled screening at about 06:20 hours.”

The statement added that the unfortunate event led to the deaths of six potential recruits and left many others injured.

Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama has visited victims of the stampede at the 37 Military Hospital.

He was accompanied by the Acting Minister of Defence, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson; the Minister in Charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu; and members of the military high command.
