A group of passionate fans of Ghanaian dancehall artist Shatta Wale on Thursday, August 21, 2025, besieged the offices of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra, demanding his immediate release.

The supporters, clad in Shatta Movement (SM) paraphernalia and chanting the hashtag #FreeShattaWale, carried placards with inscriptions such as “Please have mercy on Shatta Wale”.

According to the demonstrators, the continued detention of the musician is unfair and undermines his contribution to Ghana’s music and entertainment industry. They insisted that authorities are deliberately targeting him and vowed to continue their protest until he is set free.

The hashtag #FreeShattaWale has since been trending on social media, with fans across the country joining the online campaign to pressure authorities into securing the artist’s release.

Police officers were stationed at the EOCO premises to maintain order as the crowd grew in size. No major incidents of violence were recorded, although traffic flow around the area was temporarily disrupted.

Detention

Shatta Wale has been detained by EOCO in connection with an investigation into his tax obligations.

Shatta Wale’s management confirmed the development, noting that the case stems from the purchase of a yellow Lamborghini that drew the attention of investigators.

“This follows an inquiry related to tax obligations on the purchase of a yellow Lamborghini vehicle,” the management said in a statement.

Management on bail terms

Earlier, Sammy Flex, a member of the management team of dancehall artiste Shatta Wale, said the artiste was granted GH₵10 million bail with two sureties by EOCO.

In a video shared on X page, he said the legal team and management of the artiste are working to settle the bail conditions by Thursday, August 21, 2025.

He noted that the investigation relates to taxes on the Lamborghini vehicle and how Shatta Wale runs his company.

“The management of dancehall artiste Shatta Wale (Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr.) is issuing this statement following his detention by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) today. This follows an inquiry related to tax obligations of a yellow Lamborghini vehicle. Mr. Mensah presented himself voluntarily at the EOCO offices this afternoon along with his lawyer, Cephas Biyuo, to assist with investigations,” he said.

He assured Shatta Wale’s fans and the general public that “…his legal team is fully engaged and actively working with the authorities to resolve this matter. They are taking all necessary steps to secure his release at the earliest opportunity.”

He stressed that “We urge the SM Family and all well-wishers to remain calm and avoid any speculation. We have the utmost confidence in the judicial process. Management and its legal representatives will return to the EOCO offices tomorrow morning to continue these discussions. We will provide further updates as appropriate.”
