Free SHS: Govt releases GH¢198.1m to schools

Government through the Ministry of Education has released GH¢198.1 million (GH¢198,106,603) to all Senior High Schools and Technical and Vocational Education and Training schools.

GH¢126m non-perishable food items

Out of the amount, GH¢126 million (GH¢126,000,000) covers non-perishable food items to the National Food Buffer Stock Company.

GH¢72.1m perishable food items and recurring expenditure

The remaining GH¢72.1 million (GH¢72,106,603) covers perishable food items and recurring expenditure.

Timely supply of adequate and quality food items to schools

A press release from the Ministry of Education signed by Kwasi Kwarteng,   Spokesperson for the Ministry of Education assured the public of its commitment to ensuring the timely supply of adequate and quality food items to schools.

“The Ministry further reiterates its dedication to ensuring smooth and effective distribution of other resources in its quest to improve and sustain quality education in Ghana,” the statement added.

The Conference of Heads of Assisted Senior High Schools recently raised concerns about shortage of food in schools and threatened to close down schools heavily affected.

Free SHS package

The Free SHS comes with a package including no tuition fee, no admission fees, no library fees, no science centre fees, no computer laboratory fees, no examination fees, and no utility fees.

In addition, the beneficiaries receive free textbooks, free boarding and free meals while day students also get a meal at school for free.

Free SHS also covers agricultural, vocational and technical institutions at the high school level.
