The University of Education Winneba (UEW) community are in shock over the circumstances under which a Level 100 student of Department of Arts Theatre of the University of Education Winneba (UEW), died on Wednesday, April 16.
The deceases student, identified as Nicholas Kumi, suspected to have committed suicide over an alleged broken heart, was retrieved by the police at the Guss Hostel at the North Campus of the university, after it received a report from the University.
Students, obviously devastated by the incident, were found in groups discussing the unfortunate death of their colleague.
Many of the students the Ghana News Agency spoke with, pleaded anonymity, saying they were awestruck about the news.
They said, the deceased should have confided in his best friend, or better still a counsellor for a relief and regretted the incident.
When contacted, ACP Ibrahim Opoku, the Effutu Divisional Police Commander told the GNA in an interview that on Wednesday April 16, around 17:45 hours, three men from the University’s security directorate led by one Mr Charles Martin, informed Effutu West Police that the students’ body reported the incident to them and a team of policemen led by the Divisional Crime Officer, ASP Mr George Quainoo proceeded to the crime scene.
According to him, on arrival, the body of a male student aged about 20 wearing blue and white track suit was found hanging with a blue sponge tied on his neck and fastened at the top of a washroom shower pole.
He said, no mark of assault was detected to suggest foul play, adding they found one green rubber bucket, one dark mini plastic table, one ash HP laptop, a pair of crocs sandals, one empty exercise book and a suicide note at the scene.
According to him the content of the note suggested that the deceased committed the act due to broken heart from his girlfriend by name Wendy.
He said the body of the deceased has since been deposited at the Winneba Municipal Hospital Mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
“Further developments will be communicated,” he added.
ACP Opoku pleaded with students to endeavour to make use of the counselling department in their institutions and never consider suicide as an option.
