First-year SHS students to begin classes on October 18 — GES announces reopening date

First-year Senior High School (SHS) students are to report to school on Saturday, October 18, 2025, based on the Academic Calendar of 2025/2026, the Ghana Education Service (GES) said on Sunday.

“The Management of the GES wishes to inform Heads of all Second Cycle Institutions of the 2025/2026 Academic Calendar,” it said, emphasising the reopening date (October 18) for both Single Track and Transitional Schools.

A letter signed by Mr Prince C. Agyemang-Duah, the Director, Schools and Instructions Division, copied to the regional directors, requested that they disseminate the attached Academic Calendar to all Heads of Second Cycle Institutions under their jurisdiction.

“By a copy of this letter, Regional Directors are kindly requested to disseminate the attached Academic Calendar to all Heads of Second Cycle Institutions under your jurisdiction and ensure that heads strictly adhere to the calendar to guarantee consistency and smooth implementation across all schools,” it said.

It asked the regional directors to provide the necessary monitoring and support to the Heads of Schools in the execution of the calendar.

The letter urged all stakeholders to note the following:

The opening week for Senior High School (SHS) 1 students, the GES announced, is October 18-20, 2025.

Reopening week for SHS3 is October 27 to 29, 2025.

December 20, 2025, to January 4, 2026, is Christmas Break

January 5 to 7, 2026, is the reopening week for SHS 2 and the resumption of SHS 3.

Vacation for SHS 2 is from March 14 to May 17, 2026.

April 1- 8, 2026, is for Easter break.

The 2026 WASSCE is slated for April 20 to June 20.

“Proposed starting date for 2026/2027 Academic Year is 11th September 2026.”
