The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has directed the immediate recall of Choice Irish Cream Flavoured Drink after laboratory analysis confirmed that it contained Sildenafil Citrate, a prescription medication used to treat erectile dysfunction.

In a statement released in Accra on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, the Authority said the product — manufactured by 1 Africa Industries Limited — was found to be adulterated with an undeclared pharmaceutical substance, posing serious health risks to consumers.

According to the statement signed by Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Manso Opuni, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the FDA, the presence of Sildenafil in a food or beverage product is dangerous and could trigger severe side effects, especially when taken alongside certain medications such as nitroglycerin.

Such combinations can lead to a sudden drop in blood pressure, potentially resulting in a heart attack or stroke.

The FDA further cautioned that prolonged use of Sildenafil without medical supervision can cause loss of vision or hearing, painful or prolonged erections, and even psychological dependence.

Prof. Opuni stated that the FDA is collaborating with the manufacturer to remove all affected batches from the market for safe disposal. He also reminded producers that adulterating food products contravenes Section 100 (4) of the Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851).

Consumers, distributors, and retailers have been advised to cease sale or consumption of the product immediately and report any attempts to market it to the nearest FDA office.

The Authority reaffirmed its commitment to protecting public health and ensuring that all regulated products, including alcoholic beverages, are safe, properly labelled, and manufactured in compliance with national standards.
