Boxing sensation Ernest Akushey, popularly known as “Bahubali”, has passed on days after suffering a defeat at the Bukom Boxing Arena.
The 32-year-old boxer died in the early hours of Tuesday, September 23, 2025, at the LEKMA Hospital in Accra following a brief illness.
Akushey, who rose through the ranks at the Wadada Gym in JamesTown, has become a popular personality in the boxing fraternity considering his unique boxing style.
Born in Chorkor, the boxer was a rising star in boxing, having competed in both the super middleweight and light heavyweight divisions.
His final bout before his demise was September 13, 2025 where he lost via an eighth-round technical knockout against challenger Jacob Dickson.
Meanwhile, the National Sports Authority (NSA) has expressed deep sorrow following the sudden passing of Bahubali.
In a statement, the NSA extended heartfelt condolences to Akushey’s family, the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), the boxing fraternity, and the wider sporting community.
“The Authority shares in the grief of the bereaved family and the entire boxing fraternity, and stands in solidarity with them during this difficult time,” the statement read.
The NSA noted that it is awaiting the GBA’s full report on the circumstances surrounding the boxer’s passing.
It also reaffirmed its commitment to working with all stakeholders to ensure the highest standards of athlete welfare and safety in Ghana’s sports.
