The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has confirmed that it has initiated formal proceedings to expel former Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, following remarks he made during a Channel One TV interview on January 12, 2026.

In the interview, Prof. Frimpong-Boateng described the NPP as a “fake party” and stated that he no longer considers himself a member.

He also alleged that the Party’s 2023 presidential primary was manipulated in favour of Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s candidate for the 2024 elections.

Prof. Frimpong-Boateng said the current state of the NPP no longer reflects the party he once knew and served.

He was particularly critical of the party’s internal electoral processes, alleging widespread malpractice during the selection of its last presidential candidate.

“Look at how they elected their last flagbearer — twisting weak people’s hands, bribing delegates, intimidating others. This is the beginning of corruption, and this should not be allowed in any serious institution or any serious party,” he said.

He argued that the party’s heavy electoral defeat has not been properly interrogated, warning that failing to address the root causes while presenting the same candidate again would be a grave mistake.

“We lost the elections badly, and we did not deal with the issues that led to the losses, and we still want to go in there. I think that it will be a trainwreck if we elect the old flagbearer,” he stressed.

However, the NPP, in a strong rebuttal, dismissed the allegations as unfounded, asserting that the 2023 primary was conducted in a “free, fair, transparent, and credible manner” and reflected the will of the party’s delegates.

The party added that the process was widely accepted by participating candidates and respected members across its structures.

The statement described Prof. Frimpong-Boateng’s comments as “highly reprehensible” and harmful to the party’s unity and integrity. Consequently, the NPP has invoked provisions in its constitution to begin his expulsion.

The party stressed that these disciplinary measures are consistent with internal procedures and are intended to uphold its values and cohesion ahead of the 2028 general elections.
