The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that a parliamentary by-election will take place in the Ayawaso East Constituency on Tuesday, March 3, 2026.
This follows the passing of the sitting Member of Parliament, Mahama Naser Toure.
In a statement released on Friday, January 16, 2026, the EC explained that the seat became vacant upon the legislator’s death, triggering the constitutional requirement under Article 112(5) for a by-election to fill the vacancy.
Nominations have been formally opened for all eligible individuals seeking to contest. The Commission indicated that nomination forms may be downloaded from its website from January 16 to February 11, 2026.
Completed forms will be received at the Ayawaso East Municipal Office at North Ridge from Monday, February 9 to Wednesday, February 11, between 9:00 am and 12:00 pm, and again from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm each day.
Candidates may personally submit their forms or have them delivered by their proposer or seconder.
Each nomination form must be endorsed by two registered voters serving as proposer and seconder, and supported by eighteen additional registered voters. All forms must be submitted in quadruplicate.
The filing fee is GHC10,000 per candidate, with a reduced fee of GHC7,500 for female aspirants and persons with disabilities.
The Commission called on all prospective candidates and political parties to strictly observe the established guidelines to ensure a transparent and orderly process.
Mahama Naser Toure, a four-term legislator who served on several parliamentary committees, including Energy, Roads and Transport, the House Committee, and the Private Members’ Bills and Motions Committee, passed away on January 4, 2026, at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital after a period of illness.
