ECOWAS Commissioner advocates for stronger regional monetary cooperation

Mrs. Massandjé TOURE-LITSE, Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture, participated in the statutory meetings of the West African Monetary Agency (WAMA) and the West African Monetary Zone (WAMZ) held from February 10 to 14, 2025, in Freetown, Sierra Leone.
During these meetings, she played an active role in discussions that aim to enhance monetary cooperation among ECOWAS member states.

Reaffirming ECOWAS commitment
At the Committee of Governors of the Central Banks meeting, Mrs. TOURE-LITSE reiterated the ECOWAS Commission’s readiness to ensure coordination and collaboration with all stakeholders involved in implementing the ECOWAS monetary cooperation programme.
Her remarks underscored the importance of a unified approach to strengthening the regional financial architecture and fostering economic stability across West Africa.

Call for harmonized regulatory frameworks
During the WAMZ Convergence Council meeting, the Commissioner stressed the urgent need for member states to intensify their efforts to harmonize regulatory frameworks.
She highlighted the necessity of improving the quality of statistical data and strengthening evaluation mechanisms as essential steps towards achieving a more integrated monetary system in the region.
Continued regional collaboration
Concluding her remarks, Mrs. TOURE-LITSE affirmed that the ECOWAS Commission remains fully committed to working with regional institutions and member states to implement the ECOWAS Monetary Cooperation Programme.
Her participation reflects a broader push by the Commission to support economic integration and sustainable development within the West African Monetary Zone.

Diplomatic engagement on the sidelines
On the sidelines of the statutory meetings, Mrs. TOURE-LITSE, accompanied by her team and Mr. HAROUNA Moussa, ECOWAS Permanent Representative to Sierra Leone, paid a courtesy call on the Ministers of Finance, Trade, and Planning and Economic Development of the Republic of Sierra Leone.
This engagement further demonstrated the ECOWAS Commission’s commitment to fostering strong diplomatic ties and collaborative efforts among member states.
